Love this. I have an aunt whp’s Rat terrier jumped out the front window after 8 years of riding in her lap and no issues. People get comfortable in the usual and forget they are wild animals.

I also know someone that lets her dog hang half out the car every single day. And I want to say something. Out of love. But can’t figure out how to without being a know it all. Maybe an article about how to tell people what to do with their pets πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

But seriously. Trying to figure out how to send this to her. Great, non judge mental, advice πŸ’•

Yeah, as a car seat tech I always get weird looks when I ask if I can offer some advice. Even when people come to car seat events for their kids, half don’t follow the safety standards. It’s hard to “tell” people what to do. All we can do is keep putting the facts and ideas out there. People love their animals – they just don’t always do the right thing. (You’ll see that in the post on foods to avoid that I was so guilty of it personally.) Thanks for reading!

I am not a dog owner but I have friends and family who own dogs and I have to agree most of the time people do make all those mistakes what you have listed above. The most I hat when I see people let their dogs head out of the window or they leave them in the back of their open truck. Without giving a second chance that they can not only hurt heir pet but also can cause damage to others. A great content put together as not many people talk about that.

    • kleonard says:

So many pets run from the accident scene too. They get scared and by the time they come back, their family isn’t there anymore. It can really be a sad situation even when there are no significant injuries. Thanks for reading.

I have never thought about it, but it makes absolute sense! I wonder if one day we will see these guidelines as official and as strict as for children in cars.

    • kleonard says:

I searched for a long time before I found CPS for the dog safety. I’m so glad they are doing what they do. As a former CPST and animal advocate, it really should be something where safety standards are set. It’s really for the pets and the people in the car too. Thanks for reading!

This is amazing, and yes its the most important thing to consider when travelling with your little babies 🐢. We have a Shihtzu and we secure him on the back seat on any of our long trips when he’s with us. We use the pet seat cover and seat belt leash harness.

    • kleonard says:

Way to go fur-momma! It’s hard to because they want to come up and cuddle but just like kiddos, we need to do what is best for them.

  • Waoo this is such an informational post I’ll share it in my husband’s veterinary clinic. We really need to take care of our pets safety too while driving.

  • Waooo this is really very informative I’m going to share it with my circle too.. we have lots of dogs and cats.

  • Melissa says:

Such good info! I must say I am guilty of occasionally letting my dog wander in the car. But I don’t like taking them often as their wandering is a distraction while I’m trying to drive. I didn’t realize the harnesses and things that are available to tether them in. Definitely worth looking into!

  • lynee says:

Yes! So few people know about grapes! Very informative and succinct post! Thank you

  • This post reminds me so much of my dog who died years ago. Currently, I have no dog but if you do please consider their safety in all you do. I am still yet to recover from the death of my baby.

You’ll notice the black husky mix on the banners of this site. That is Chewie (Chubakka the Wasabi Dog) – she was 16 in that photo on her birthday. It took a year before I got another dog. He is now 5. She is still my FB profile picture. Yeah, it still aches and I understand your pain.

  • Carolyn says:

Such important information! It can be confusing. And wow, no way would I have gotten on that tram…not even for my son πŸ™ It is so sweet that you got to borrow a dog. I love that πŸ’•

  • Dogs are a girls best friend! I like that you mentioned the advocating because it dry true first urine simply.

  • Darja says:

Oh the things we do for the loved ones πŸ™‚ Did you manage to catch a glimpse of the view or was that completely besides the survival mode priorities? On a more serious note, I think you are raising a very good point. It is uncanny how many fake their special needs/allergies/disorders and sad that it has such a lasting negative affect on the global perception of those issues.

  • Lynee says:

I hate that F**KING gondola. We have a house out there and go rather often. Love the views and the top of the mountain but that gondola makes me wish it would just fall and get it over with. Can we take a moment and remember the way it dips as it passes one of the anchor points? Anyone have a clean pair of underwear I can borrow??

Appreciated the distinction between therapy and service. And, the understanding of where they should or shouldn’t be according to the law. Not that ANYONE could say anything about it without being sued. But, good to know.

Question – Therapy dogs – ok for kids to pet (with permission)? I know service dogs are a hard no…

    • kleonard says:

Glad I’m not the only one that hates that thing. Everyone else was sooooo happy and blissful on it. And yes, I remember that dip. Ugh, en eternity.

Therapy dogs, with permission, okie dokie for petting.

  • Melissa says:

What a story! I totally agree! It bugs me to walk into Walmart or another store and see someone walking a pet when they have posted no pets just service animals. Or those that have a vest on but don’t indicate its a service animal and makes you wonder if someone just bought a vest for their dog. On that note, I loved your humor in this!

    • kleonard says:

Thank you for taking a moment to stop by. Yes, it is hard to see people abuse the system because they know they can without real penalty.

  • lynee says:

Love this – sometimes I think the right human food is better than dog food. Good to know what those foods are!

    • kleonard says:

My dog is totally spoiled – he knows the second someone peels a banana in this house. He won’t be left without!

  • Jess says:

This post took me back to the time I had to perform CPR on a yorkie…let’s just say it was not graceful lol. Great information and I love the demonstration illustration

  • Darja says:

Wow, I didn’t even know that dog CPR existed (neither when done by dogs nor on them). You live you learn – and you never know when any of this will come in handy πŸ™‚

  • Melissa says:

I have seen this done once but that was a vet clinic. I never knew how to do it myself. Thanks!

  • Lynee Port says:

I think you forgot about the designer collars that have matching flowers… like Sweet Poodle’s collar.

But seriously, have you tried the spray collars – do they work?

    • kleonard says:

Poodle’s collar was in the first section πŸ˜‰ I haven’t used a spray collar. I’ve heard mixed results. Some dogs just learn to deal with it and keep barking.

  • Lynee says:

I had never even thought of a dog choking! Always grateful to learn things I never knew I never knew!

  • Jess says:

I normally use a harness on my pooch (hes a yorkie) because the vet said they have some sort of throat issue that makes them even tell pet owners to deter from using a collar.

    • kleonard says:

I didn’t know that about Yorkies. I have several friends who have them and never heard of that. Make sense though. I’m sure he’s happy with his harness. πŸ™‚

  • Melissa says:

I completely agree with what you have said here. I’ve seen a couple dogs have allergies. One was the dog we had when I was a kid. Switched her food to a lamb and rice formula and that’s all it took. When I met my husband they had a lab that itched and licked all the time due to allergies.

  • Darja says:

Oh I had no idea that dogs had allergies, but if I think about it, it does make sense. Hope all dog owners are as attentive as you are to their pets to find the best diet.

  • Bushra says:

Your post is a great resource for pet owners, especially with dogs as a lot of people don’t even know about anaphylactic shock and lose their loving pet due to being their ignorance. Animals anatomical system is very similar to human being so a lot of the things we as a human can get, indeed dogs and cats can go through the same.

  • Hemendra says:

Didn’t had any knowledge about cat allergies! Thought they are allergic proof. Anyway, thank you for this useful information

  • Carolyn says:

Wow! I never would have thought of learning cat for! So useful! (And you are right, if my cat needed to perform cpr on me…he’d just be sitting there whining that I’m not feeding him)

  • Melissa says:

Such a great resource for information! I have heard of CBD oils but never thought about using them much with my pets.

  • Darja says:

Oh man, I just imagined a poor little dog accidentally getting high and not being able to communicate or ask for help. Poor fella! Interesting that there are now dedicated CBD products for pets. Learn something every day πŸ™‚

  • oprolevorter says:

Very interesting points you have observed, appreciate it for putting up.
